Job Title: Recycling Ambassador

Department: Environmental Health and Sustainability

Classification: Non-Exempt

Position Summary: A temporary position for someone who will inform users of the Rio Grande Recycle Center about what materials are accepted for recycling at the center and how to best utilize curbside recycling at their home or business.

Supervision Exercised and Received: This position works under the direct supervision of the Environmental Health and Waste Reduction Specialist. The Environmental Health and Sustainability Director manages the department and oversees all staff.


Essential Job Functions: 


  • Educating the public about waste reduction through printed materials, attending and face-to-face interactions.
  • Training people how to properly divert waste through reusables, recycling, and composting at Rio Grande Recycling Center, and through curbside pick-up services.
  • Supervising and cleaning the Rio Grande Recycle Center.
  • Surveying residents, visitors, and businesses about waste reduction practices and programs.

Data Entry

  • Recording information about participation and violations at the Rio Grande Recycle Center.
  • Relaying feedback from users of the center to the Environmental Health staff


  • Cleaning and labeling waste collection tools and signage used at the Rio Grande Recycling Center.
  • Picking up small debris.
  • Reporting illegal dumping to the Environmental Health staff.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent

Experience:   Previous customer service or public interface position

Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.

NOTE:  This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire.  Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree  
• Knowledge of waste reduction practices, equipment, and strategies
• Experience in educating people

Position Type and Work Hours: Part-time, 29-hour work week, Tuesday - Saturday, hours may vary with workload.

Work Environment: 

  • Outdoors/Off-Site: Staffing an outdoor facility under tent with chairs and a table.

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting & Carrying: Occasionally up to 25 lbs. such as small recyclables, debris, equipment, etc.
  • Physical: Reaching, standing, sitting, talking, crouching, kneeling, seeing, driving, and hearing.
