Primary Function:  

Provide care, feeding, and handling of animals in accordance with AHS policies and procedures. Additionally, performs daily maintenance of all animal housing, and maintains building, grounds and equipment in proper working order.  Provide excellent customer service both internally and externally. 

Schedule: Friday, Saturday *shift times vary as needed

Pay: $13.00/hour

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Perform daily cleaning of animal areas in accordance with established procedures
  2. Monitor appetite, hydration, stools and vomit of all shelter animals
  3. Assist Vet Services with fecal/urine collection
  4. Answer pager calls to assist with incoming and outgoing animals, food program pick up and donations
  5. Restrain animals for medical procedures and euthanasia as required
  6. Provide food for animals in accordance with established procedures
  7. Move animals throughout the shelter as needed
  8. Perform spot cleanings in the Adoption Center
  9. Assist in behavior modification and enrichment programs for animals in shelter
  10. Perform daily cleaning of transfer cages, litter boxes, dishes, laundry and donated goods
  11. Assist with janitorial duties as needed
  12. Work with AHS volunteers in a positive and effective way to facilitate meaningful volunteer engagement.

Qualifications Required:

  • Animal handling experience preferred
  • Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Skills in working independently as well as on teams
  • Problem solving skills
  • Willingness to travel to other shelter sites
  • Must be able to handle the physical and emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, which includes the use of euthanasia.

Work Environment:  

  • Environment can be dirty, wet and humid
  • Exposure to unpleasant odors, loud noises and chemicals
  • Work requires restraining, lifting, and carrying animals and cages
  • Exposure to pests such as fleas and ticks
  • Possibility of being bitten or scratched
  • Job requires standing for long periods of time, bending, squatting, reaching, and heavy lifting
