Position is responsible for supporting the safe and humane transport and care of animals, in accordance with AHS best determined practices, from outside agencies to AHS and other Animal Transport Alliance partners.
Schedule: Part-Time - Primarily week days, with some weekends required. Overnight trips will require the availability to work overnight.
Support the safe and reliable transport of animals on a timely schedule to ensure proper placement. This includes safely operating the transport vehicle during day and overnight hours.
Assist with the loading and unloading of animals at source and destination shelters.
Monitor appetite, hydration, stools and vomit of animals on the transport vehicle.
Provide food for animals on the transport vehicle in accordance with established procedures.
Perform spot cleanings on the transport vehicle.
Participate in continued communication with the AHS Animal Transport team regarding the status of the transport and any other critical matters.
Responsible for accurate and timely recordkeeping in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Must be able to problem solve and work under general instruction while on the route.
Assist with computer data entry and recordkeeping.
Assist with other duties as requested or assigned.
Work with AHS volunteers in a positive and effective way to facilitate meaningful volunteer engagement.
Be an ambassador and represent AHS positively to external agencies and the public.
Vehicle operation experience
A valid driver’s license
Animal handling experience
Problem solving skills
Basic computer knowledge
Ability to follow directions and be able to work alone and unsupervised
Must be able to handle the physical and emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of euthanasia.
Successful completion of a criminal and motor vehicle background check following offer of employment
Successful completion of a road test and commercial driving medical certification following offer of employment
Employees must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and team lift 100 lbs.
The environment will be predominately in the vehicle and on the road between sites or other locations. The road and weather conditions will be a factor for safety and efficiency.
The vehicle will be at times loud, crowded, dirty, wet, and have strong odors. Staff must be aware and adjust as needed.
The position requires physical activity with much loading/unloading and cleaning of vehicles, lifting, bending, twisting and pushing and pulling.
Work requires restraining, lifting, and carrying animals and cages
Exposure to pests such as fleas and ticks
Possibility of being bitten or scratched
