Primary Function:   Responsible for daily supervision of Animal Services Department including Animal Technicians and Veterinary Technicians.  Monitors and assures execution of practices and protocols for processing and care of animals, sanitation and cleanliness of facility.

Schedule: Full Time - weekend availability will be required.

Location: Woodbury, MN

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Monitor and assure execution of practices and protocols for processing and care of animals, sanitation and cleanliness of facility
  2. Oversee staff scheduling, training, performance for Animal Services
  3. Create positive working climate that encourages development of staff skills and abilities
  4. Demonstrate by personal example the desired standards of conduct and work performance
  5. Address and resolve customer, veterinarian, staff and volunteer concerns and complaints
  6. Assist Site Manager with recruitment, interview and hiring of employees for Animal Services
  7. Assist Site Manager with preparation of area budgets for development of operations budget
  8. Assist Site Manager in ensuring employee time records and payroll reports are completed and distributed to accounting on schedule
  9. Print daily reports and handle follow up on animal status for quality assurance and oversight of daily activities (Pre-adoption stage/status, Date to Adoption, Shelter transfers etc)
  10. Coordinate transfer of animals to and from other Animal Humane Society campuses
  11. Oversee care and handling of animals in the shelter by staff, customer and volunteers to maintain humane standards of care and the safety of people and animals
  12. Assist Site Manager with ordering inventory and maintaining supplies for Animal Services
  13. Work collaboratively with other supervisors, managers, directors to effectively supervise operations
  14. Attend and participate in site and functional meetings to provide representation for staff and areas of responsibility in management planning
  15. Address and resolve foster volunteer concerns and inquiries
  16. Work collaboratively with the Volunteer Services department and volunteers to facilitate positive and effective volunteer engagement.
  17. Assist Site Manager with fielding customer concerns

Qualifications Required:

  • Associates degree or equivalent in Veterinary Technology from a two year college or technical school and two years of Veterinary Technician supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and training.   Preferred candidates will have a degree in Veterinary Technology and at least one year of shelter supervisory or management experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, ability to supervise multiple personnel and create strong team relationships
  • Shelter staff training and coaching experience
  • Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skill.
  • Capable of multi-tasking and prioritizing
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule
  • Willingness to travel to other Animal Humane Society sites as needed.
  • Ability to change job location to support organizational needs and development.
  • Ability to handle animals and assist in euthanasia procedure as needed
  • Must be able to handle the emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of euthanasia

Work Environment:

  • Some office/desk-based
  • Animal areas may be humid, noisy, and odorous
  • Exposure to pests such as fleas and ticks
  • Possibility of being bitten or scratched.
