Reporting to the Manager, the Project Engineer, Bridges will be responsible for business development and overseeing multiple aspects of bridge and/or civil structure projects. You are an experienced hands-on designer who is versatile, demonstrates strong leadership, can work in a multi-disciplinary environment, a go-getter who will actively seek new business opportunities, and provide guidance to team members.

You are known as an authority in bridges and/or heavy civil structures and have achieved a multi-disciplinary mastery on projects of large scale or complexity. You will exercise full autonomy in technical decisions, which are generally not reviewed unless they imply important sums or risks for the company. You will lead a team of professionals, technicians, and support staff in the delivery of our bridge program in the area. You will have experience with business development, client interactions and project delivery.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Manager, Bridges for the overall performance of the department, including meeting established quality targets, project delivery timelines and continuous improvement objectives;
  • Provide mentoring, assistance, encouragement and motivation to team members and assist the Manager, Bridges with the implementation of technical career development plans for engineers within the department to support skills development, effective succession management, career pathing and staff retention;
  • Working with Manager, Operations/Project Managers to monitor the overall performance of projects being undertaken by the department, ensuring effective and proactive management of scope, schedule, quality and effective client service. Provide technical leadership and support to ensure consistent and effective use of quality management standards;
  • Monitor overall workload and staffing levels within the engineering group to maintain overall utilization at desirable levels and work with the Manager, Bridges to support interoffice collaboration and resource/work sharing to balance workloads and meet project delivery objectives across the market sub-sector;
  • Drive productivity, motivation, and technical performance. Ensure compliance with established quality and production procedures. Provide leadership to sustain a culture of continual improvement and client satisfaction;
  • Execute/oversee preliminary and detailed design for bridge and/or heavy civil structure projects;
  • Prepare technical memos on relevant design elements, specifications and non-standard special provisions, and study reports;
  • Oversee and validate regulatory compliance of structures and associated roadway/railway designs;
  • Develop and prepare technical specifications, and contract drawings for tender and construction;
  • Respond to technical issues related to designs;
  • Coordinate input from other disciplines, including managing information sharing and preparing fully integrated designs and reports;
  • Attend project meetings with clients, architects and consulting disciplines;
  • Prepare study schedules, meeting minutes, and presentation materials;
  • Provide proposal/pursuit preparation support when required;
  • Conduct Business Development with current and potential clients; and
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships and communication with clients, department managers, project managers and team members;
  • Liaise with all discipline members, sub-consultants, clients, and agencies;
  • Ensure compliance with established quality and production procedures. Provide leadership to sustain a culture of continual improvement and client satisfaction;

  • Other duties as assigned/required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary degree in Civil Engineering specializing in Structural Engineering from an accredited university would be an asset
  • Minimum 5 years’ of related experience;
  • Registered as a P. Eng.;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Technical understanding, design abilities, and current on bridge technologies;
  • Experience with design of rehabilitation of existing structures;
  • Specific areas of expertise required in the planning, preliminary and detailed design, and construction of bridges of standard and complex geometry, and culverts;
  • A thorough knowledge of current design codes and standards is essential;
  • Strong computer skills;
  • Committed team player with strong organizational skills;
  • A vehicle in suitable working order and a valid driver’s license is required.
