WSP is currently seeking a High Voltage & Utilities Engineer to join our Conveyance Infrastructure department, located at our Thornhill office.  Reporting to the Manager of Conveyance Infrastructure this position will be responsible for design and project management, project documentation and controls, of multi-million-dollar high voltage underground transmission cable and ancillary underground utilities. You will work as a member of a dynamic team working in a fast-paced environment solving challenging problems involved with electrical transmission.



  • The successful candidate will serve as a civil engineer on electric transmission line design projects for high voltage underground transmission cable including: self-contained fluid filled also known as low pressure oil filled; XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) solid dielectric, and high-pressure filled
  • Work with contractors in conventional design-bid-build projects as well as design-build projects for some of the largest utilities in the country
  • Knowledge of NESC, ASCE, ACI and other applicable standards in the engineering and design of electrical underground and systems, voltage conversion projects, new capacity projects as well as electrical infrastructure replacement projects is an asset.
  • Requires in-depth knowledge of civil engineering principles, methods, and practices for the design and construction of utilities and services, drainage, site restoration, including general familiarity with track and roadway engineering for urban transit projects
  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction methods and procedures including trenchless methods including tunnels and vertical shafts
  • Prepare power cable routing plans, burial & trench details, grounding plans, and electrical bonding details for foundations, structures, and equipment
  • Extensive and relevant engineering design/construction experience in a multidisciplinary design environment where detailed drawings and specifications specific to utilities design are produced
  • Feasibility studies, route selection, operational audits, reliability studies, pulling tension calculations
  • Preparation of installation and maintenance manuals for new and existing cable systems
  • Work associated with underground installation
  • Ductwork: trenching, directional boring, duct banks, manholes
  • Turnkey installation, contract and emergency service
  • Develop, track and monitor budgets as well as provide forecasts on a regular basis;
  • Prepare and distribute monthly progress reports
  • Review project deliverables to ensure requirements are fulfilled
  • Contribute to RFP, Bid and Proposal documents
  • Maintain communications with clients and project teams and prepare responses and logs to team and client requests
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, in Civil Engineering
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in the design of electrical utility transmission systems and other underground infrastructure
  • Professional Engineer designation preferably in Ontario;
  • CAPM, PMP Certification are an asset
  • Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Project; knowledge of SharePoint is an asset
  • Previous experience with MicroStation or AutoCAD would be an asset
  • Project Management experience on underground utilities and municipal water and sewer projects;
  • Familiarity with Class EA, planning, and approval process;
  • Ability to quickly identify and understand project issues and opportunities and proactively provide options for solutions
