Overview of the opportunity with us:

WSP is currently seeking a Geotechnical Field Technician to join our Geotechnical Engineering department, located at our Markham (Steelcase) office. Reporting to the Director of Environment, Central Ontario, the position will be responsible for working with a team of specialists to conduct geotechnical investigations and testing throughout the Greater Toronto Area area for our clients.

What you can expect to do here:

  • Provide technical services in a field and office environment, working with other professionals and learning the ins and outs of geotechnical work in a pure geo-services office;
  • You'll be supervising and carrying out site inspections of construction work, and materials testing;
  • You'll conduct in situ testing of various materials on construction sites, compaction testing and testing of concrete and asphalt;
  • You'll work alongside an experienced and close-knit team, contributing to the overall success of WSP's Environment team, and the overall business through your dedication to enhancing our offering as specialist geotechnical experts;
  • You will consistently uphold strong workplace health and safety practices and be an advocate for always doing the right thing and;
  • You will work with and provide support to other members of the field technician group in assisting with other field and office activities as required

What you'll bring to WSP:

  • A Civil Engineering diploma, preferably with a focus on Geotechnical Engineering;
  • You may be CCIL and CSA Certified or are interested in becoming certified;
  • You have at least one year's worth of field experience of soil and asphalt compaction, concrete testing, subgrade evaluation and are eager to learn more in a professional setting;
  • Ideally, you have some experience working as a geotechnical field technician under your belt;
  • You might have previous knowledge of drilling procedures and safety on sites;
  • You own a vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage and hold a Valid (G-Level) Ontario Driver's License
  • You are mobile and willing to work on a combination of field and office work, as travel is part of the job;
  • You have excellent computer skills, proficiency with common industry software is required
  • You are flexible, well organized, interested in technical and personal advancement, able to carry out assignments with minimal supervision;
  • You are able to work in a fast-paced environment, strong report writing skills and verbal communication in English are essential;
  • You demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and have the ability to communicate effectively and to proactively respond to time-sensitive issues.
