WSP is currently seeking a Highways & Roads Drafting Technician, to join our Transportation Engineering Department located at our Edmonton or Red Deer office. Reporting to the department manager, this position will be responsible for assisting senior engineering staff in the design and/or drafting of transportation engineering projects..



  • Processing of project basemap and survey information including setting up all project basemap and creation of the existing ground DTM and conversion of project data between various coordinate systems as required.\
  • Preparation of simple to complex preliminary and detailed design drawings including plans, profiles, typical cross-sections, geometrics, drainage and utilities, spot elevations, signing and pavement markings, detours and construction staging.
  • Work closely with design engineers/project engineers/project managers to complete design and working drawings for both construction and post-construction phases.
  • Ensuring highway and road design drawings incorporate all pertinent design features tailored towards easy of understanding by end users.
  • Contribute to the cost effective, proper and timely production of transportation engineering and drawings that meet all client and approval agency requirements, and design standards.
  • Transform preliminary concepts and sketches into engineering plans and drawings based on project requirements using AutoCAD / Civil 3D platform.


  • Minimum of 3 years of roadway and highway engineering drafting experience (contract administration and/or inspection experience considered an asset).
  • Civil Engineering Technology/ Technician diploma from a recognized community college.
  • Working knowledge of transportation engineering principles and design standards such as Alberta Transportation Design Standards, TAC Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads and Alberta Municipalities (MD & Counties) design standards are desirable for the Design Technician position. 
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in the application of computer aided design/drafting programs including AutoCAD and Civil 3D. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to generate high quality work.
  • Ability to work both individually and as a member of a larger team in a high pace environment.
  • Possess good oral and written communication skills.
