The Social Studies Content Lead is responsible for supporting schools and teachers in improving student achievement in Social Studies across grades 4-8. Specifically, the Social Studies Content Lead will lead the on-going refinement of curriculum and assessments, network-wide teacher professional development and collaborative planning for social studies, and school leader professional development to support effective instructional practices in their schools. The ultimate aim of this role is to ensure that students develop into curious, critical thinkers about the world around them.
The responsibilities of the Social Studies Content Lead will be, although not limited to, the following:
Curriculum Development (across fourth through eighth grades)
- Supporting the on-going refinement of shared social studies units
- Leading the on-going refinement of FirstLine pedagogical frameworks for the teaching of social studies
- Lead in developing associated resources for teachers to use in detailed unit and lesson planning
- Support the development of literacy-rich social studies curriculum
- Lead an annual cycle of reviewing and revising scope and sequence as both our internal cycle of continuous improvement and aligned to the changes that occur at the state level
- Leading the weekly collaborative lesson planning process
- Support school leaders with quality assurance practices in social studies lesson planning
- Serves as a critical thought-partner in developing the 3rd and 4th grade content curriculum
Data Tracking, Assessment and Reporting
- Track and analyze data to better improve social studies outcomes
- Develop and provide guidance on formative assessment practices to drive improved instruction and curriculum
- Collaborate regularly with school leaders and the network academic team to analyze student progress and identify exemplars and areas in need of support
- Support school leaders in understanding and implementing best practices of social studies curriculum and data driven instructional practices
- Lead the network wide professional development for weekly collaborative professional development, new teacher training, and other network wide activities: these activities may include lesson study, data driven instructional practices, analyzing student work, analyzing classroom instruction video, direct workshops, and applied practice
- Train teachers in best practices of content pedagogy– serving as a “critical friend” and coach to the teaching staff throughout the school year by modeling practice and providing ongoing informal observations and feedback to improve.
- Support school leaders and teacher leaders in the delivery of professional development sessions for content
- Support school leaders in the development and implementation of individual professional development plans for teachers who need more support in teaching content or content-literacy
Creating a Culture of Reading and Writing
- Help school leaders promote a culture of writing in all subjects through supporting all teachers in how to use writing in their classes as a method of promoting rigorous standards for critical thinking and for effective communication
- Help school leaders promote a culture of reading in all subjects through supporting all teachers in how to embed literacy practices in their classes
Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree; Master’s preferred
- Five (5) years teaching in a non-selective urban school, minimum of two (2) years teaching social studies preferred
- Knowledge of Louisiana history preferred
- Demonstrated success in improving student achievement in a K-8 setting
- Experience with and understanding of curriculum, instruction, and data practices
- Demonstrated knowledge of coaching teachers on content preferred
- Demonstrated passion for writing and strong understanding of how to effectively teach writing
- Unwavering commitment to excellence
