Our Northshore Mining site in Silver Bay, MN recently completed a $100 million expansion, and is now the only U.S. based iron ore processing facility to produce low silica DR-grade pellets, feedstock inventory for Cliffs’ Hot Briquetted Iron Plant in Toledo, OH, which will be commissioned in mid-2020.

Minnesota Operations

  • Northsore Mine -   Babbitt, MN / Silver Bay, MN
  • United Taconite – Forbes, MN / Eveleth, MN

 

Michigan Operation

  • Tilden Mine, Negaunee, MI

Cliffs is looking for bright, motivated engineering students with a strong interest in the mining industry.  Our internship program is twelve weeks in duration, in which you will receive important industry training and get involved in meaningful real-world projects like planning a program, designing a process, or implementing a technology.  The culmination of your program will include an opportunity to present your work to management.

 

Summary of Principal Functions: The Mechanical Engineering Intern will be responsible for supporting the site Maintenance and Reliability staff and completing several special projects and initiatives. 

 

Specific Responsibilities and Examples of Past Projects:

 

  • Conduct analysis on how to extend life of equipment for haul trucks, shovels, and other equipment
  • Participate in business improvement projects and initiatives
  • Assist with any as-built drawings
  • Assist with coordination of final rougher tails to hydro
  • Participate in regular mine planning meetings with Maintenance and Reliability staff
  • Other duties as assigned by the Maintenance and Reliability staff
  • Past Project Examples:
    • Motor Asset Program cataloguing all motors on site
    • Motor acceptance testing using Motor Circuit Analysis
    • Hydro/Main tails equipment information collection
    • Permanently mount accelerometers for plant equipment
    • Analysis conduction on effectiveness of new dispatch system
    • Coding system development for preventative maintenance operations
    • Testing/analysis on new pumps used in large haul trucks

 

Education Needed: Candidate must be enrolled in an accredited school or university and currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related degree.

 

Experience Needed: No previous experience required.  Previous internship experience preferred. AutoCAD experience preferred.
