Electrical Maintenance

Northshore Mining Company, a subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., is a taconite mining and processing facility located in Northern Minnesota.  The mining facility is located in Babbitt, MN, and the processing plant is located in Silver Bay, MN, on the north shore of Lake Superior.

.We have periodic openings for Electrical and Instrumentation Technicians.  Although we may not have an immediate opening, we are always accepting applications for this position. Due to the large volume of applications received, only those chosen for further consideration may be contacted.  Applications remain on file for one year.  You will be required to reapply for this position after the one year time period has expired.


The primary function of this position is to repair and maintain all electrical/instrumentation equipment associated with the mining and production of taconite pellets in a self-directed work environment. This position may be located in either Silver Bay or Babbitt.


Requirements for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Minimum of a 2-year post-secondary degree, with preference for degrees in electrical or instrumentation.

    • OR 4-year post-secondary degree

    • OR 4-year apprenticeship in related work

    • OR 2-years full-time military history with directly related work experience (part-time military only considered if candidate has at least 2 years of full-time deployment with work experience applicable to position)

    • OR 2 years of directly related full-time work experience in an industrial environment

  • Preference for candidates with working knowledge in electrical maintenance in an industrial or mining environment.

  • Previous experience with high voltage is preferred.

  • Candidates with PLC backgrounds are preferred.

  • Minnesota electrical license a plus.

  • Work assignments may include both electrical and instrumentation tasks.

  • Excellent safety record and genuine concern for safety in the workplace.

  • Excellent attendance record.

  • Good troubleshooting skills and proven mechanical aptitude.

  • Must be able to recognize upset conditions, determine cause, and then take corrective action.

  • Must be highly motivated, have an exceptional work ethic, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to work in a self-directed team environment.

  • Must be able to use a computer. Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems software is preferred.  Will be required to generate work orders and parts requisitions.

  • Must be willing to work rotating shifts, overtime, vacation relief and holidays.

  • Applicants must achieve a passing score on the NSM Electrical/Instrumentation assessment.
